Ben Gibbs was selected on June 25 by the HUSTL Board as the varsity boys head coach for the Tippecanoe Tornados, replacing Troy Grimes who resigned after coaching during the 2008-09 season. As a player, Mr. Gibbs played for Anderson Heights High School and was selected to the All-Area and All-Conference teams two years and to the Indiana All-State team his senior year. He played for Eastern Illinois University during his freshman year in college and then transferred to IPFW for his final two years. Matt Painter was Assistant Coach for Eastern Illinois University during this time. After a year working for a juvenile delinguency center, he played professionally for five years in Mexico for the Latino League. He even tried out for the Indiana Pacers and made it through all but the final cut. Mr. Gibbs was known for his three-point shooting and his unusually high vertical leap. Coach Gibbs loves teaching and working with young people. He is a substitute teacher at Tecumseh Middle School and he has coached off-season boys and girls teams in the Lafayette area for the past three years. Coach Gibbs wants his players to know that nothing is possible without God and their relationship with God is more important than playing basketball. Write Comment (0 comments) |

Talk about a tall order: The Tippecanoe Tornados varsity boys basketball team faced a 7-footer in their second seeding game at the National Christian Homeschool Basketball Championships (NCHBC). The rest of the team was big, fast and talented, too. As a result, God’s Academy of Dallas, Texas, dominated the Tornados 97-49 in a late March 17 game in Springfield, MO. God’s Academy is a collection of college freshmen-age players still finishing their high school studies. The team competes against college squads. The much younger and less experienced Tornados played hard but were no match for God’s Academy. Three Tornados scored in double figures -- Tim Sebald 11, and Matt Heber and Clay McNeely 10 apiece -- while Andrew Moore and Vince Scott added eight points each. Heber, Moore and Scott combined for 25 rebounds. Tippecanoe plays its final seeding game in the tournament’s National Christian Education Division against Central Park at 10:25 p.m. EST Thursday, March 19. Tippecanoe is 1-1 in the seeding round, and will be assigned to a tournament-round bracket once seeding play is completed. The tournament round takes place March 20 and 21. Scott was named an honorable mention NCHBC All-American. He plays in the All-American Game tonight (March 18).Two other Tornados also started tournament play. Nathaniel Scott’s Team USA Blue -- aka the Smurfs -- lost to South Central Wisconsin 56-26 on March 16 and rebounded to defeat the Mountain Home Lions 60-50 on March 17. Scott claimed two rebounds in the first game and two boards, an assist and a steal in the second game. Team USA Blue competes in the Homeschool Boys U-18 Division, and faces the Amarillo Flames at 10:25 p.m. EST March 19.
Amelia Scott’s Team USA Red -- nicknamed the Red Hot Chili Peppers -- fell to Team USA Gold 34-24 on March 17. Amelia Scott scored six points and pulled down eight rebounds. Team USA Red squares off against Conroe Christian Academy at 2:40 p.m. EST March 18. Team USAs are squads made up of players who show up at the National Christian Homeschool Basketball Championships without a team. Write Comment (0 comments) |
